Our top "stash" picks are:
- MLB: New York Mets
- NBA: Memphis Grizzlies
- Soccer: Viktoria Plzen
- Just a gut feeling. I can't give you much more details than that. Sorry, I'm not a avid viewer of the Czech League, I haven't yet subscribed to the cable package.
- Confidence: 60%
- Soccer: 3 Goals or More
- Neither of these teams have a great defense, therefore, to believe that 3 goals or more will be scored between the two teams (Inter and Sampdoria) is very likely.
- Confidence: 60%
- MLB: Kansas City Royals
- I may regret this pick, but even though the White Sox are favored, I just have a feeling that the Royals might win this. Jake Peavy is 0 - 6 in his last 7 starts against the Royals, and his 5.68 ERA in his 3 games against them last season were his worst against any other opponent. The Royals hit .346 against him in those games. Ervin Santana is new to the Royals (from the Angles) and has been pretty consistent, he's just had some bad luck. He is 1 - 1 with a 1.29 ERA in his last 3 at the White Sox's stadium. Paul Konerko is just .189 and Adam Dunn just .100 against him. Also as a side note, very often in baseball if teams play multiple games over consecutive days, the same team rarely wins two times in a row.
- Confidence: 60%
- Soccer: Any Other Result
- The whole world knows who Real Madrid is and when they see them matched up against a team that few Americans could pronounce the name of without hearing it first, the initial thought is that Real is going to destroy this team. But Galatasaray, a team from Turkey, is actually pretty good. They are leading the Turkish League table right now and have two world well known and accomplished players on their side now after the most recent trade window. Both Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba have not only played in the Champions League before but have both won titles (Sneijder with Real Madrid and Drogba last year with Chelsea). I would not be shocked if Galatasaray pulled off an upset and knocked Real out of the Champions League. Ok, I would actually be very surprised, but what I am trying to say is that this team is good and they will not lose by more than 3 goals to Madrid.
- Confidence: 80%
- Soccer: Any Other Player
- The question is who will score first, Christiano Ronaldo or any other player? There is no doubt that when these two teams take the pitch, Ronaldo will be the best player on the field. But he is not the only goal scorer for Madrid, and Galatasaray has a few of their own as well. It may very well be Ronaldo who scores first, but with Higuain, Di Maria, Benzema, Ozil, Ramos, and others (and thats just for Real Madrid) also on the pitch, it is hard for me to say that Ronaldo will score first. But this truly is a coin flip.
- Confidence: 50%
- Soccer: Borussia Dortmund Win
- Dortmund is in second place in the current Bundesliga table while Malaga is in danger of not qualifying for next year Champions League from La Liga. Dortmund looked more convincing in the round of 16 than Malaga did and I believe they will win the first leg of this fixture as well.
- Confidence: 60%
- Soccer: Two or more
- If you read above where I talk about all the goal scorers that will be on the pitch for this fixture, it seems hard to think that there will not be at least two goals scored in the second half. Play often opens up in the second half more goals are scored. I think that will be the case in this match as well.
- Confidence: 60%
- MLB: Detroit Tigers
- The Tigers have won 16 of 20 at the Twins' ballpark by a combined 117 - 81. Clearly they have had a lot of success there, including their Opening Day win there two days ago. The current line is DET -150 Anibal Sanchez is no Justin Verlander and has had rough spring, posting a 7.31 ERA in four games, but the Tigers definitely have more talent on offense and hopefully Sanchez wont get lit up by the Twins' bats.
- Confidence: 70%
- NBA: Washington Wizards
- Ever since the return of John Wall, the Wizards have not looked great, but they sure have not looked as awful as they did for the large majority of the season. The Raptors on the other hand have not looked great recently and have won just 2 of their last 10 games.
- Confidence: 70%
- NCAAM: George Mason Patriots
- The line is only George Mason -1 on this game, so pick at your own risk. These two played two days ago at Santa Clara, which game Santa Clara won by 8. I went to one of Santa Clara's home games this year when they lost to BYU by 20+. They are not a great team, but I suppose George Mason isn't really drawing attention from scouts either. This game is at George Mason, so I'm giving them the edge here.
- Confidence: 60%
- NBA: New York Knicks
- I could see this game going either way. The Knicks have become one of the hottest teams in the NBA and are peaking at the perfect time, not only to grab the number 2 spot out east, but hopefully carry their momentum into the playoffs and get to the Eastern Conference finals. The Hawks are a good team as well and could win this game at home. But I think the Knicks are playing too well right now to let this game slip away from them.
- Confidence: 60%
- NBA: Josh Smith, Points + Rebounds
- Lets be honest, Melo is not going to score 50 again tonight. Even if he meets his season average of 28 ppg and gets 14 points in the first half, Smith would only need to get 10 points and 5 rebounds, which is not uncommon for him at all. Again, this pick could go either way. It is hard for me to believe that Melo's shot is gonna fall like it did in Miami for the second night in a row, but he is a scorer, and scorers know how to get their buckets. I am not very confident on this pick, but my gut tells me Smith will win this battle.
- Confidence: 40%
- MLB: Pittsburgh Pirates
- The line in this one is Pittsburgh -130. The Cubs won the Opening Day game against the Pirates 3 - 1. The Pirates' pitcher, Wandy Rodriguez, is 2 - 1 with a 2.25 ERA in 3 starts against the Cubs. The Cubs have also not won the first 2 games of a season since 1995. I like the Pirates to get revenge at home for the Opening Day loss.
- Confidence: 60%
- MLB: Boston Red Sox
- The line is New York -115. Boston's starting pitcher for this game, Clay Buchholz, went 0 - 2 with a 15.26 ERA in 2 starts against the Yankees last season. However, he was 3 - 0 with a 0.79 ERA in 6 spring starts, and the Yankees still don't have Jeter, ARod, Texeira, or Granderson. Basically it comes down to Robinson Cano and Kevin Youkilis for the Yankees. Kuroda has been a very solid pitcher for the Yankees, but the Red Sox clearly have the better line-up and should get a second in the Bronx.
- Confidence: 70%
- MLB: Tampa Bay Rays
- The line is Tampa Bay -145. Tampa Bay were also favored in yesterday's game, but lost 7 - 3 and cost us our pick of David Price getting the win. The Orioles had an impressive season last year, and put together some great at-bats yesterday. Chen was 12 - 11 last year in 32 starts. Hellickson was 10 - 11 last year, but only went 7 innings 6 times in 31 starts, so don't count on him pitching for very long, and if his reliever has an outing similar to today, they will most likely lose again. I'm taking the Rays because they are at home and they lost yesterday, but I wouldn't be super suprised if the Orioles won.
- Confidence: 60%
- MLB: Los Angeles Angles
- What a game it was between these two clubs on Opening Day! Thanks to a strong bullpen, the Angels came out on top after 13 innings. The Reds struggled to get quality at-bats, and left several runners stranded on base. The Angels stars Trout, Hamilton, and Pujols didn't fare well either, going a combined 1 - 14. Right now the Angels have the better line-up, so even though the odds are Reds -120, I like the Angels in this one. Ryan Ludwick is out for the Reds. Wilson has been good but not extraordinarily great for the Angels, and Latos has never faced the Angels.
- Confidence: 70%
- MLB: New York Mets
- The Mets put the beat-down on the Padres on Opening Day, winning 11 - 2. The line on this game opened at -130, but is currently -150, which is some good movement. Mets' pitcher Matt Harvey went 2 - 1 with a 2.96 ERA over seven starts during the spring. He had a solid year last year as well. The Padres' Clayton Richard is 2 - 1 with 2.84 ERA in five career starts versus the Mets, but the Mets clearlly have more firepower in their at-bats, and the Padres are still without start slugger Chase Headley.
- Confidence: 80%
- MLB: Atlanta Braves
- The line for this game started at Braves -105, but has moved to Braves -130. The Braves did really well in the offseason to bring some major talent to their team. It sure payed off in the season opener, and should continue to pay dividends this season. The Phillies' Roy Halladay had a rough year last year, going 11 - 8 with a 4.49 ERA, and a rough spring, posting a 6.06 ERA in six games. The Braves' Paul Maholm wasn't super good the last time he faced the Phillies, but he did not yield a run in his last 20 1/3 innings of the spring.
- Confidence: 70%
- NHL: Monteal Canadiens
- The Flyers have won 4 straight against Montreal at home, but the Canadiens are an impressive 12 - 3 - 2 on the road this season. The Flyers are really fighting for the last playoff spot with only 13 games left. The Canadiens will likely have Carey Price in net who is 1 - 5 with a 3.38 GAA versus the Flyers. The Flyers will likely have Ilya Bryzgalov in net, who is 1 - 3 - 1 with a 3.21 GAA versus the Canadiens. The Canadiens have given many greens on SFTC, and we hope another one comes here.
- Confidence: 60%
- NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins
- Although the Penguins' 15 game winning streak was snapped with a loss to the Sabres, they still sit atop the East and in good position for a Stanley Cup run. Their most recent game was their first without Sidney Crosby, who suffered a broken jaw and is out indefinitely. The Penguins have won 7 straight against the Rangers by a combined 28 - 8. Both teams have made some recent trades in hopes of boosting their postseason potential. After all this, the Penguins should be money in this game.
- Confidence: 80%
- NBA: Knicks more 3PM in second half
- The Knicks are a great 3 point team and average 11 made threes a game while the Hawks average 8. The Knicks only issue is that they can be very streaky. But without the interior presence of Tyson Chandler, I think the Knicks will take lots of perimeter shots and if they can get into a groove, they should win this one easily.
- Confidence: 70%
- NBA: Denver Nuggets
- The Jazz are desperate to win every game left in their season if they hope to steal the 8th spot from the Lakers. They have to win their home games where they have a huge home court advantage thanks to a crazy Utah crowd. But tonight, I think the Nuggets will be too much for the Jazz, but I don't know, maybe it's not good to bet against desperation.
- Confidence: 50%
- MLB: Milwaukee Brewers
- The line is Brewers -135. Although they lost to the Rockies yesterday, they should win today if Wily Peralta has the kind of outing that he did last September. The Rockies' Juan Nicasio was injured much of last season, so it's hard to say how he'll fare today. I think the Brewers close out this series with a win at home though.
- Confidence: 70%
- MLB: St. Louis Cardinals
- These two teams split the first two games with nearly opposite results. Arizona won the first game 6 - 2, and St. Louis won the second 6 - 1. The line is currently Arizona -115, so its not a huge advantage for the Diamondbacks. From my memory, St. Louis' Lynn is the better pitcher, so I'm going with them to take 2 of 3 in this series.
- Confidence: 50%
- MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers
- The line is currently LA -130. It's hard to say how Lincecum will fare this season. Last season he had some truly awful outings, and wasn't very consistent at all. I think this game most depends on which Lincecum shows up. With so much uncertainty and such a favorable line for the Dodgers, I'm taking them at home to complete the series.
- Confidence: 60%
- NHL: Edmonton Oilers
- The Flames are 10 - 6 - 2 at home this season, and have had great success against the Oilers there, but they have lost some key players to trades, and the effects are obvious. The Oilers meanwhile have won 4 straight and just beat Calgary 4 - 1 at home on Monday.
- Confidence: 60%
- MLB: Oakland As
- We've incorrectly picked the As in the first 2 games of this series, but the line for this game is -145, which are pretty good odds. We'll take the As one more time to get a win at home, but if they lose again, this may be the last time we pick them.
- Confidence: 50%
- NBA: Memphis Grizzlies
- The Blazers season is done. They have started to look like a team that is more interested in getting a higher lottery pick than a team that is interested in winning games down the stretch. They have lost 5 straight and even though this game is in Portland, the Grizzlies are a much better team and should win this game convincingly.
- Confidence: 50%
- Soccer: Monterrey Win or Draw
- Rarely can I bring myself to pick an MLS team to beat any team in almost any other league in the world. I know that the Mexican league is not one of the best leagues in the world, but I still believe it to be better than the MLS. The Galaxy have only played 4 games this season and are just getting Landon Donovan back into the squad. I think the Galaxy could come away with a draw, but I don't see them winning this game.
- Confidence: 60%
- NHL: San Jose Sharks
- The Sharks have won 5 in a row and have a great home record, at 12 - 1 - 4. Their forward Ryane Clowe is in all likelihood being traded, and did not play in their last game. They are fighting for a playoff spot though, so I'm going with them at home.
- Confidence: 60%
